Road Trip to Rocky Point

Road Trip to Rocky Point

Puerto Peñasco (or Rocky Point) is a place to RELAX, literally, because there is nothing much to do but lay on the beach, swim in the calm and clear waters of Mar de Cortes, go to the pool, eat, read, sleep, wake up and repeat.

That sounds perfect for me because I definitely need some rest and relaxation! Who doesn’t?

Road Trip to Rocky Point

Well, during the last weekend of September a couple of years ago, we took a three-day family vacation there and it was great! It was around 90 degrees every day!

Boardwalk, Puerto Peñasco.

Of course there is the required trip to the boardwalk or “malecón” where you see the typical Mexican souvenirs and small seafood restaurants, and you have to take the traditional picture by the water with the Sea of Cortez and the resorts in the background.

Puerto Peñasco is a small town in Sonora, but tourists drive down from Arizona and California, as well as from other parts of northern Mexico to enjoy this small beach town.

A drive from San Diego, California to Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico, is about 5 hours, non-stop. We took the I-8 East all the way to Yuma, Arizona then headed South towards San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora in Mexico. Once you cross over to Mexico you will see signs leading to the Toll-Road towards Puerto Peñasco. The road is surrounded by desert and pretty safe and well maintained since you pay about $10 per car (100 pesos – make sure you take PESOS with you).

Lodging:

As far as I know, the lodging in Puerto Peñasco is not your typical hotel destination, because all of the beachfront resorts are condominiums/time shares. You don’t have to own one, you can rent one for the weekend from the owners or from each resorts’ Website. However, don’t expect room service or “all you can eat” buffets like a hotel. You are basically staying in someone’s apartment, which has at least two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a laundry room and a terrace facing the ocean. So you have to take your own food and towels, which is why a trip to the local supermarket is a must! There is Wi-Fi in the resorts though! :)

Las Palmas Resort in Puerto Peñasco

Here’s the LINK to the Rocky Point Convention and Visitors Bureau Website to see a listing of all the resorts in Puerto Peñasco and a few hotels.

This is my third time there and for the first time we stayed at a different resort called Las Palmas. Every condo tower has it’s own small pool and Jacuzzi, and there is also a central pool with two slides! During my previous trips, we had stayed at the Sonoran Sun, which has one main pool.

Pirate Ship in Puerto Peñasco

Entertainment:

-       We went on the Pirate Ship around the bay, which includes food, open bar (margaritas and beer), a show and fireworks. It was pretty fun for us because our group got picked to participate in some funny dance competitions.

-       There are two other “party boats” that offer food, music and open bar (margaritas and beer).

***WARNING: We got a reservation for one of the party boats from a vendor at the boardwalk and it was for 6pm, but this time the captain of the ship decided to leave 30 minutes earlier. We had never experienced this before, so we complained and one of the boaters there offered to take us to the Pirate Ship, which was the last to leave, but of course he charged us $10 (or 100 pesos) for the ride. The people on the Pirate Ship charged us the difference of the ticket (because the party boat is cheaper since there are no fireworks and show). So make sure you arrive 30 minutes early.***

-       We went to a small restaurant on the boardwalk called Beach Bum, which has great live music on Saturday nights and the food is pretty good too. It’s on the second story of one of the buildings facing the ocean.

-       If you really want to go “partying” it’s going be hard to find the party. You might as well make the party at your condo. We tried asking locals what were the popular places to go have some drinks, but nobody really seemed to know. We just noticed that locals really like to hang out at the boardwalk at night with their cars bumping loud music and groups of people were even playing live music by their cars! So we drove around town, within the residential areas and found some small nightclubs and bars, but most of them were pretty empty or they closed early.

Sailing in Puerto Peñasco

Activities:

Here are a just a few activities I can remember seeing:

-       You can get a massage on the beach, rent a jet ski, go on a sailboat and have some fun on the banana boat! We’ve done all of them, and my favorite is the sailboat because it’s relaxing and you’re on it for about 40 minutes!

-       You can rent off-road vehicles (quads/ ATVs) right outside the resorts.

-       There are some golf courses right by the resorts.

-       You can also drive over to La Choya Bay, where a lot of people from the U.S. actually rent or own properties. There is a really cool place right behind “JJ’s Cantina” where you can take pictures at, with the bay in the background. Fishing boats dock there and you can see what they catch.

Either way, as I mentioned at the beginning, Puerto Peñasco is not a party town (although they say it's pretty popular among "spring breakers"), it is simply a destination to go relax and enjoy the warm and calm waters of the Sea of Cortes/ Mar de Cortez.  :)

Have you been to Puerto Peñasco? What other recommendations do you have? Leave your comments and enjoy some more pictures below!

¿Quien no?

Aquí les comparto algunas fotos del viaje :)

¿Ustedes han ido a Puerto Peñasco? ¿Tienen algunas otras recomendaciones?
